POTSDAM – Do you have what it takes to start your own business? Does your business idea make enough sense to earn a profit? Is your dream business right for you? How do I get money to start and market my business?

Anyone who has ever dreamed of owning their own business, or who has what they think is a great idea for the next successful startup, will have an opportunity to learn more about how to evaluate their ideas – and what steps to take to turn their dreams into action – throughout the month of May in Potsdam.

The Village of Potsdam’s Planning and Development Office, the Potsdam Chamber of Commerce and the Adirondack Economic Development Corp. (AEDC) are co-sponsoring a series of four “Business Boot Camp” workshops on consecutive Tuesdays in the month of May, providing a good overview of the basics of starting and running a business.

There is probably no better time than now to be starting a business in the greater Potsdam area. Downtown Potsdam is in a period of transition, with several opportunities available for startup businesses on Market Street and other high traffic areas of the village. Small business funding is also available through the Village of Potsdam’s Revolving Loan Fund and several loan programs offered by AEDC. And there is plenty of support to help would-be entrepreneurs get off to a successful start. Besides the four scheduled workshops, AEDC will provide one-on-one technical assistance to anyone hoping to start their own small business.

Workshops include:

May 9 – Will it Fly? – Evaluate your business idea and the steps needed to be successful;

May 16 – Marketing Basics – Learn how to effectively reach a target market with a message/brand that keeps customers coming back;

May 23 – Know Your Numbers – Understand the basics of business accounting, cash flow projections, breakeven analysis, determining the right price for products and how to plan for profit, and

 May 30 – Show Me The Money – Learn how to determine how much money you would need to start, sources of available funds and tips for making a financing presentation.

Fledgling entrepreneurs can sign up for any one – or all – of the workshops, which will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Potsdam Municipal Building. All classes are free but pre-registration is required. Call (315) 274-9000 or (315) 265-1670 to sign up. Class size will be limited, so you are encouraged to register early.
